The castle stands on the banks of the Orgzhe River, the bend of which resembles an elbow in shape. That is why Loket got its name.

The whole castle is a complex of buildings - a similar structure was typical of the Middle Ages. At the foot of Loket there is a small town of the same name where you can walk, have lunch or, if you're lucky, see the local medieval-style fair.

I was very impressed by the contrast between the stone gray-brown walls of the castle and the bright colors, as in many cities of the country, the walls of city houses and their red roofs.

They say that if you came to the Czech Republic and did not visit a single castle, then you wasted your time. In this article, I will not describe all the palaces of this country - there are too many of them here. And I’ll tell you what interesting things you can see in Loket Castle.

Loket Castle Location

Loket is a beautiful gothic castle located in the west of the Czech Republic and surrounded by a small, almost toy-like town. It is located 120 km from Prague near Karlovy Vary in the protected natural area of the Slavkov Forest. Towering on a hill above the Ogre River, Loket Castle looks very picturesque.

Basic Moments

Loket Castle got its name from the word "elbow", as the bend of the Ogre River resembles a human arm bent at the elbow. The date of foundation of the castle is not known for certain, presumably it is more than eight hundred years old.

Loket is shrouded in many stories and extraordinary legends. The legend of the castle tells about the life of a terrible dragon that lives in the tower and guards many ghosts wandering the castle cellars. Another legend is connected with Emperor Charles IV. When the emperor once again hunted in the vicinity of the Loket castle, his horse stumbled, and a healing spring appeared at this place. Today, the well-known Czech resort Karlovy Vary operates on this site.
