Špilberk Castle, Brno, Czech Republic (with Map & Photos)

Description: Špilberk Castle was founded in the 13th century by the King of Bohemia, Premysl Otakar II, as a royal residence and fortification for the defense of the royal city of Brno. During the reign of the Margraves of Luxembourg, the castle lived through the of its greatest splendor since the margraves chose it as their headquarters, from which they ruled throughout Moravia. From the 15th century the castle served solely as a fortress. Taking into account the importance of the castle for Moravia, the Moravian States bought it in the year 1560 and immediately resold it to the city of Brno. It was owned by the city until 1621, the year in which it was seized from the city for its participation in a revolt against the Habsburgs, so that the castle again became the property of the States.
