Menorca is the second largest island in the Balearic archipelago, located in its northeastern part. It is called the island of fire and winds, an open-air museum. "Menorca" in Spanish means "lesser" - in relation to Mallorca.

The Phoenicians called Menorca the "Island of Lights", observing strange lights from their ships on the steep shores of the island. Moreover, what these lights are and where they shone from is still not known for certain.

Minorca, despite its proximity to Mallorca, is markedly different from it. On the one hand, the island is considered one of the most expensive and fashionable resorts in Spain, on the other hand, here you will not find huge hotel complexes of the Mediterranean coast familiar to the eye. The fact is that Menorca, according to UNESCO, is an international biosphere resource, on the territory of which the construction of tall buildings is prohibited (only two five-storey complexes, built before the decision of UNESCO, have survived). Today the rules say: hotels should not be higher than 3 floors, the roofs of houses of the inhabitants of the island should be in harmony with the color of the soil, and the walls should be painted white.

Menorca, even during the high season, is less crowded than Mallorca, and certainly quieter than Ibiza. Everything here is leisurely, without fuss. Mainly those who choose rest on their own, not depending on typical tourist trips, thoughtfully choosing a pastime to their liking, rest here. Most of all there are Englishmen and Catalans, who are zealous to ensure that Menorca does not lose its identity.

How to get there

You can get to Menorca from Barcelona Airport with a domestic flight to the island. The flight takes approximately 40 minutes. Regular direct flights Moscow - Barcelona are operated by Aeroflot all year round, charter flights are added during the high season (usually on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday). In addition, you can fly to Menorca from Mallorca and Ibiza, or get by sea.

The nature of Menorca

Menorca is quite distinctive. This is reflected in its historical, cultural heritage and even in natural features. The island is more flat, while its northern coast is heavily indented by coves with pebble beaches and reddish sand. The southern coast is cut by ravines - humid areas with a special microclimate, with characteristic fauna and flora prevail here. It is a largely agricultural area with fertile land.

In the center of the island, green meadows with bright spots of flowers, reminiscent of Scotland, coexist with patches of rocky desert scorched by the midday sun. A mixture of images of the north and south, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean - from these contrasts, Menorca is composed.

Menorca Accommodation

Half of the island's hotel stock is made up of apartments, the rest is 3-4 * hotels. For several years now, it has been forbidden to build multi-storey hotels in Menorca; their maximum height should not exceed 3-4 floors. The hotel fund, which is small in terms of capacity, can simultaneously receive about 40 thousand tourists.
