The Rhône River is one of the largest rivers in Central Europe, it is considered one of the most important for the Mediterranean side. It also coincides with the Duero River, since it belongs to two countries.

Where is the Rhône River born?


Where does the Rhône River originate and where does it end? Many wonder, because to answer these questions, we have that the Rhône River has its source in the Rhône Glacier located in the Swiss Lepontine Alps, at an altitude of 2209 meters. at the eastern tip of Valais.

Route


The Rhône River has a length of 812 kilometers divided into 290 km in Switzerland and 522 km in France. To drain or that is to say, the Rhône River has its mouth in Lake Geneva, the river runs through a glacial valley between the Bernese Alps (north) and the Vallesan Alps (south).

After crossing Lake Geneva, the Rhône River reaches France entering from the west through the western foothills of the Alps, that is to say then the Rhône River flows past the city of Lyon, where it receives its longest tributary the Saone river.

Following its course to the south, the Rhône River between the Alps and the Massif Central. Then at the height of the Arles, the river divides into two arms, to the west with the small Rhône and to the east with the Great Rhône, thus forming the Camargue delta, (The Rhône Delta).

After this journey, the Rhône River finally empties into the Gulf of León (Lyon) in the Mediterranean Sea.

In Switzerland its waters pass through Geneva and Valais, and through French territory they pass through Auvergne - Rhône - Alps, Occitania and Provence - Alps - Côte d'Azur.
