After the death of the king, the wives had to perform the rite of sati (self-immolation). This rite was considered the privilege of the chosen ones for the widows of the rulers-rajas and military leaders. The scope of the ceremony was sometimes truly royal. So in a giant funeral pyre of one of the Vijayanagara maharajas, three thousand of his wives and concubines simultaneously left for another world.
