At the highest altitudes, there are about 60 glaciers and numerous snow fields. Above the tree line is an area of alpine meadows with colorful mountain flowers. But climbing the highest mountains is only recommended for more experienced climbers with the right equipment, and walking in alpine meadows is strictly prohibited. Rain clothes and good boots are also important for tourists.

The national park is open throughout the year, although not all areas are accessible at all times of the year. There is a central Olympic visitor center in Port Angeles, as well as additional outposts near the Hoh Rainforest, Forks and Hurricane Range.
