A Brief History of Fannette Island
Though small in size, Fannette Island has a colorful past. In the late 1800s, an English sailor named Captain Dick Barter—nicknamed the “Hermit of Emerald Bay”—made the island his home. He even built a small chapel and intended it to be his final resting place. Sadly, he perished in a storm and was never buried there.
In the 1920s, Lora Josephine Knight, the wealthy philanthropist behind the stunning Vikingsholm mansion on the mainland, constructed a tiny stone Tea House atop the island. She and her guests would boat across the bay to enjoy tea while soaking in panoramic views of Lake Tahoe’s turquoise waters and forested mountains.
Visiting Fannette Island Today
Fannette Island sits about 150 feet above the sparkling waters of Emerald Bay. It’s part of Emerald Bay State Park and can only be accessed by watercraft—visitors often kayak, canoe, or take a boat tour to reach it. While swimming to the island is not allowed, paddling out is a fun and scenic experience, especially during summer.
Once on the island, you can hike up a short but steep trail to the Tea House ruins. The view from the top is spectacular—offering a 360-degree panorama of one of Lake Tahoe’s most iconic vistas.
