The Legend of Lake Carezza

There are many magnificent mountain lakes, but only one boasts sparkling water, the color of which is the result of a loving sorcerer throwing shards of the rainbow into it.

According to the legend of the Ladin (a people living in the Italian South Tyrol), once upon a time, a very long time ago, a beautiful mermaid admired the pristine waters of Lake Carezza, at the foot of the Dolomites. One day she was sitting on the shore and combing her hair, quietly humming. The sorcerer Masare was fascinated by the mermaid's voice.

To take possession of the nymph, he turned to the witch for help. A complex plan was drawn up. The sorcerer, disguised as a jeweler merchant, crossed the lake along the rainbow.

But he forgot to put on jewelry, and the forgery was discovered. The mermaid did not fall into his trap. Completely maddened by his own stupidity, Masare broke the rainbow into a million pieces, which fell into the lake. The annoyed magician threw all the jewelry into the same lake. Since then, its water has become rainbow-colored.

This broken splendor still radiates its color through the crystal-clear water.

Facts about Lake Carezza

Lake Carezza (Lago di Carezza in Italian, or Karersee in German) is located at an altitude of 1.5 kilometers in the mountains of South Tyrol. The lake is surrounded by dense spruce forests, and its clear waters reflect the peaks of the Dolomites.

The lake has another name given to it by the Ladin people: "rainbow lake". Not a single river flows into it; the main influx of water to the lake comes from underground springs and melted snow.

Today Lake Carezza is one of the most important tourist destinations in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. During the winter season, it is often visited by scuba divers, who are attracted by the purity of the water and its amazing emerald hue. Photographers love this place for the opportunity to capture wonderful shots with mountain peaks in the background.

The size of the lake is not constant and varies greatly during different seasons: in the spring its area and depth are maximum, and in the summer they can drop by more than half. Don’t even try to swim in it, because during the hottest time of the year, the temperature of Lake Carezza does not rise above 13 degrees Celsius. And you can get a rather large fine for such swimming.
