Before South Park Mall's initial location, Carolina Place Mall, which opened in 1991, was planned for more than 30 years. The site was purchased by the Belk and Ivey families for $8.5 million, but they later determined it was too distant from the town. After South Park was constructed, Ivey's finally sold the entire parcel of property to Belk, and in the middle of the 1980s Carolina Place, as it is currently called, started to be planned.
