Description and attractions

The name of the island is associated, most likely, with the copper mines that once operated here (in Greek, "chalkos" - copper). In 1983, it was declared the "Island of Peace and Friendship" and since then, young people from all over the world have been gathering here to discuss the problems of the younger generation.

The administrative center and main port of the island, Halki or Nimboriyo, is built in the southeastern part. His two-story houses with tiled roofs rise like an amphitheater along the slopes of the bay of the same name.

The main attractions are the church of St. Nicholas, Agios Nikolaos, built in 1861, which stands out among all the buildings with its majestic bell tower and the neoclassical municipal building with a stone Clock Tower (XIX century). The ancient capital of the island was Horyo, a village built in the interior of the island to protect against pirates. During its heyday, its population reached 4,000 people, while today it is practically uninhabited. Its stone houses, standing like an amphitheater on a mountain slope, remind of the heyday. Above Horio you can see the ruins of a medieval fortress built on the site of the ancient Acropolis. Inside the fortress, the church of St. Nicholas, Agios Nikolaos, with frescoes, has been preserved.
