BEACH:


Fort Myers is on the Caloosahatchee River and has no notable beaches, but some of the best in America are on Sanibel Island, 26 miles (42 km) from downtown Fort Myers, plus a toll bridge.

The 12-mile (19 km) island is bounded by the sandy beaches of Talcum-Powder, and Sanibel is one of the world's best seashell collection locations. In Florida, the entire shoreline Up to the high tide mark is public, but if you're driving, you should find a public parking lot or meters instead of pulling out of the way to play in the sand.

In Sanibel, the main beaches with parking include Lighthouse Beach (31 km, 20.5 miles), which has a functional light, fishing pier, and boardwalk, and further north on the island, Bowman's County Park. BEYOND THE BEACH:


The great inventor, Thomas A Edison, spent many winters in Balmy Fort Myers, and the impressive palms they donated to the city still inspire other residents to add more. Edison's taste, the 1880's home is now a museum. Next door is the simpler home of his admirer and friend, Industrialist Henry Ford, and across the street is Edison's wonderful research laboratory. Tours are offered daily.

Sanibel Island is home to the Jn Darling National Wildlife Refuge (900 Tarpon Bay Road), 21.5 miles (35 km) from Fort Myers. The refuge is home to more than 200 species of birds, in addition to alligators and otters. You can walk, bike, drive, canoe, or ride a narrated tram through the 6,300 acres (2,500 hectares). For kayakers and canoeists, the area offers a spectacular coastal experience, the great CALUSA BODEWAY PADDING trail. It is about 100 miles (160 km) of marked routes in rivers, bays and around the mangrove trees of the coast. You can hire your own canoe or purchase a guided tour (www.greatcalusablueway.com).
