Heidelberg Castle, Baden-Württemberg (with Map & Photos)

Heidelberg Castle is the icon of the German city of Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg (Germany). It rises on the hill that is close to the city and from it you have privileged views of the Neckar river valley and the city.

The castle (although it may not seem so at first glance) is actually a building that is partially in ruins. This castle was actually a beautiful Renaissance palace, which represents German Romanticism.

Brief History: Visit Heidelberg Castle (Germany)

The castle was built in the 12th century and was the residence of the first Count Palatine, thus forming the first Palatinate. During the following centuries, the castle was enlarged and the Renaissance-style facades that can still be seen today were incorporated.

Sadly, the decline of this castle began in 1689, when the 9-year war began in which the French attacked the area and the castle was destroyed. After the war, the castle was partially rebuilt but a fire in the 18th century devastated it. Since then this castle has remained in ruins.
