Mikulov Castle, Zámek, Czech Republic (with Map & Photos)

Description: Mikulov Castle (in German: Nikolsburg) is located in the Czech town of Mikulov, in the South Moravian Region, a few kilometers from the border with Austria. Originally, the castle was built on a historic Slavic village at the end of the 13th century, later passing into the hands of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Its current construction is due to a reconstruction carried out between 1719 and 1730, when it was acquired by the House of Dietrichstein. At the end of the Second World War, the troops of Nazi Germany, who had occupied it as a barracks for the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, set the castle on fire before starting their retreat.

The Dietrichsteins are an Austrian noble family that died out in the 19th century, the head of which since 1654 bore the title of imperial prince (fuerst).

During World War II, the castle was completely destroyed. Restored in 1950. Today the castle houses a local history museum. You can walk freely around the area.
