Mona Island, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico (with Map & Photos)

Mona Island (Isla de Mona) is a semi-desert and uninhabited island, located to the west of Puerto Rico and belongs to the municipality of Mayagüez, despite being closer to the Dominican Republic than to the Puerto Rican archipelago. Known by the Taínos as Amoná - the name of their cacique who inhabited the island prior to Spanish colonization - this enchanting island is known for its incalculable ecological value, protected today by the Department of Natural Resources (DNER).

On Mona Island you can camp and spend the night. We advise you to do it at Sardinera Beach, since the government of Puerto Rico has provided the basic and necessary services there, such as toilets and showers. If you are going to stay, you can take a boat trip around the island.

In Sardinera Beach there is also a police center and a first aid service, as well as radio communication with Puerto Rico. It is the closest thing to civilization that you can find, since Isla Mona is one of the most remote islands in the Caribbean.

Therefore, if you want to enjoy complete tranquility, and you are looking to get lost in the Caribbean, spend a vacation on Isla Mona, in the heart of Puerto Rico.
