Krimml Waterfalls, Austria's Biggest Falls (with Map & Photos)

The Krimml Waterfalls are the highest cascade in Central Europe (380 m). This miracle of nature is located in the small village of Krimml (4 km from the waterfall) with a population of only 900 people on the border with Tyrol.

The Krimml Waterfalls is not just streams breaking down, it is crystal shimmering with all the colors of the rainbow, dousing the clothes and faces of travelers with millions of sparkling diamond splashes.

The Krimml Waterfalls are formed by the Krimmler-Ahe stream, flowing from a glacier located at an altitude of 3000 meters. The cascade consists of three parts: the lower threshold is 140 meters high, the middle one is 100 meters and the upper one is 145 meters high. Near the lower threshold you will find restaurants with amazing cuisine and souvenir shops. The second level can be reached by taxi, but further - only on foot.

A worthy entourage to the waterfall are the amazing landscapes of the Hohe Tauern National Reserve. Interesting exhibitions are held here every year, so cultural entertainment is not limited to just walking.

Entrance to the national park (and, therefore, access to the waterfall) is paid, but this does not bother anyone, since all the money raised goes to the maintenance, development and improvement of the infrastructure of the protected area.

An extremely cozy idyllic corner of Austrian nature is quite popular among tourists, so it is wise to book hotels nearby in advance. It is best to admire the waterfall in summer, enjoying its coolness and incredible noise, which in this place sounds without any dissonance, like the real music of the mountains.

The Krimml waterfalls are no less unique in winter. They freeze into a giant ice sculpture, and the surrounding landscapes resemble the fabulous pictures of Frozen. In winter, only the lower thresholds are available. The entrance to the upper observation decks is open until October 29.

On the way to Krimmler Wasserfalle you will see no less beautiful metas. For example, in Zell am See you can admire a mountain lake surrounded by the Alps. Having already climbed up to the waterfall, it is impossible to pass by a small farm where you can have a snack, drink fresh milk surrounded by grazing cows or a carbonated drink made from Apfelsaft gespritzt apples.

Krimml waterfalls in Austria are visited by more than 350,000 tourists a year. The hiking trail is not at all difficult, but very comfortable. All trails are well-groomed (no off-road!), there are benches for rest and beautiful viewing platforms. In one of these "transit points", the famous sculptor Christian Hitsch created several granite seats in the shade of trees, organically fitting into the surrounding landscape.

Also for the rest of tourists (especially those who come with children) through certain distances on the trail there are alpine huts, where you can spend the night if necessary. There are parking lots and even equipped toilets on the territory, as well as special routes for people with disabilities.

The ascent to the upper observation deck is not difficult. It is only a little over an hour on foot, starting from the very foot, and the nature here is so picturesque that you don’t even want to look under your feet. Before you have time to look back, you are almost at the very top. Almost, but not really. Especially active travelers prefer to climb even higher to see the beginning of the Krimmler Kees glacier with their own eyes.

Don't worry that you won't be strong enough to reach the end. Near each observation deck there are signs with information about the length of the route. So it is not difficult to adequately assess your strengths.

The fact is that the Krimmler waterfall is a favorite place for auto and motorcycle clubs. Sports cars and rare models impress with their variety and luxury.

Here, high in the Alps, many couples in love walk in the evening - at night, the waterfall is illuminated, creating a magical romantic atmosphere. During the day, not only the sun shines, but also rare moss, which is able to reflect the sun's rays.

The Krimml Waterfalls trip is the best holiday for those who love mountains, forests, nature and movement. Come here and see for yourself!
