Old Town - Toledo, the ancient capital of Spain, is good to see right after Madrid, the current capital: the contrast between these two cities will be obvious.

Madrid is a modern metropolis with huge business centers, streets of boutiques and branded stores, a famous university, world-class museums and several architectural monuments of the 15th-18th centuries. Toledo is the exact opposite of Madrid. Once here, I seemed to have been transported from our time to the early Middle Ages.

The quiet and calm town is located on a hill, so the narrow and winding streets of the Old Town make the tourist suffer: the path from one attraction to another requires considerable physical effort (my legs ached by the evening). You can leave the city and find yourself on the other side of the river, from where the whole of Toledo is visible at a glance, in just a 40-minute walk, and the trip by tourist bus to all key places in the city will take half an hour.

But despite its small size, Toledo hides many true treasures and is a unique city that offers you a choice of traditional Spanish, Arabic and Jewish cultural heritage. It is no coincidence that it was called the city of three religions: representatives of all three churches have been peacefully coexisting here for centuries, so the mixture of architectural styles in Toledo is truly unique.

The ancient secrets of artisans are kept here, ancient traditions are honored and no fuss is tolerated, so you should come here not only to see historical monuments, but to completely immerse yourself in history. This city seems to be frozen in the past and gives us such a unique opportunity!

How to get there

Toledo is rarely visited separately from other significant cities in Spain, most often it is visited together with Madrid, and this is not surprising: the town is only 70 kilometers from the capital, so getting there is not difficult. Buses and trains run on the Madrid - Toledo route, or you can go on a trip by car. Let's take a look at the pros and cons of all these options.
