Fort Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik, Croatia (with Map & Photos)

Fort Lovrijenac is a massive stone structure - one of the most important elements of the defense system of Dubrovnik. Built in the 14th century on a 40-meter-high peninsula from which it takes its name, it was supposed to protect the western part of the city from land and sea attacks. The fortress and the nearby Bokar Fort were the main filming locations for Game of Thrones.

The fort was equipped with 10 large-caliber cannons, the most famous of which, the lizard, was produced by the then famous local founder Ivan the Christ Rablyanin. The thickness of the walls of the fort from the sea side ranges from 4 to 12 meters, it is covered with a 1.5-meter ceiling. The wall from the side of the city is only 60 cm. It was a protection against a possible uprising of the crew and an attempt to take control of the city: thin walls could easily be shot from cannons located in other fortifications.

According to legend, back in the 9th century, the Venetians, who wanted to take control of Dubrovnik, planned to build a fortress on the Lovrijenac peninsula. Hearing of this, the people of Dubrovnik built their own fortress within three months, welcoming the Venetian ships carrying construction materials. The first historically confirmed mention of a defensive structure on this site dates back to 1301.
