Fjadrargljufur is a breathtaking canyon in the south of Iceland, not far from the famous village of Kirkjubaejarklaustur.

Fjadrargljufur Canyon has never been one of the "top" attractions of the island (like the basalt canyon Studlagil, which today attracts tourists and scientists from all over the world!), And usually fewer tourists came there than in other, more popular places: on the Hvitserkur rock or in Thingvellir Park ). However, this was due only to the fact that Iceland literally entirely consists of stunningly beautiful places, each of which you want to visit more than once. Rest assured, if such a canyon existed in any other country, it would be a major attraction!

But today everything has changed. In 2016, when photos of the Fjadrargljufur Canyon spread all over the world, and YouTube and Instagram travelers began to massively publish reports about their trips, everyone wanted to visit here! In just one year, the canyon's attendance almost doubled, and in 2018, the canyon was visited by 300,000 tourists (compare with the population of Iceland - 357,000 people!).

Mass excitement led to the fact that the country's authorities even closed the canyon to visitors for 3 months: from March to June, so that nature here would have a little rest from people and restore flora and fauna. Most likely, these three-month "holidays" will now be regular, so it's best to find out in advance whether Fjaðrárgljúfur is open for visiting or not.
