Inveraray Castle

Inveraray Castle on the shores of Loch Fyne is the ancestral home of the Cambell clan, whose representatives have played prominent roles in the history of Scotland and Great Britain for 7 centuries. It was built in the 18th century by order of the head of the family, who was granted the title of ducal. When choosing a place for a new residence, he was deeply impressed by the local landscape. The houses of the inhabitants of the town of Inveraray were even moved to the side so that they would not obscure the beautiful view of the lake. The family of the leader of the clan still lives in the castle, so only part of the premises and the park are open to tourists.

What to see

The building of an absolutely fabulous appearance is a surprisingly harmonious synthesis of romance, baroque and gothic. It was built of local bluish stone, the impression is enhanced by the battlements on the central building and 4 corner towers with cone-shaped roofs.

Inside, tourists await the treasures of the Armory Room. Its walls are lined with intricate patterns of blades, spears, halberds, a stunning circle of sunshine with rays from hundreds of guns. Great swords, battle axes, flint muskets. The pearls of the collection are the dagger and sword of Rob Roy McGregor, Scottish Robin Hood, a relative of the Campbells on the maternal side.

The dining room, decorated with luxurious tapestries, is illuminated by a crystal chandelier fixed to a 21-meter-high ceiling. The interior is furnished with hand-made furniture made of fine wood, and ceremonial sets are on the tables.

On the second floor there is an art gallery, a clan history hall, and personal apartments. One of the bedrooms has a four-poster bed. According to legend, a young harpist was strangled on it, and since then the otherworldly music coming from here foreshadows the death of one of the Campbells.
