The Many Legends of Adam's Bridge, India (with Map & Photos)

Adam's Bridge or Rama Bridge is a chain of coral islands mixed with shallow water, where the depth reaches 0.5-1.5 meters, which connects Sri Lanka and the southern coast of India. The bridge is 48 kilometers long. Earlier, up to the 15th century, it was a pedestrian path that connected the island with the mainland. However, later, due to earthquakes and a typhoon, the bridge partially collapsed and sank under water. The existence of the walking path is confirmed by many travelers, including Marco Polo.

General Information

According to legend, the Adam's Bridge is the path along which the gods walked. The Indian epic Ramayana tells that the monkey god Hanuman used her to save Rama's beloved bride, Sita, from the Sri Lankan demon king Ravana.

But in reality, there was never a bridge at this place; passengers were transported by the Ramanujam ferry built in Glasgow. It can be reached from Talaimannar (Talaimannar), located on the northern tip of the island of Mannar, in the Indian port Ramevsharam. But in 1984, due to the civil war, communication between Sri Lanka and India was stopped. If the peace process continues, the ferry service can be restored.

National Treasure

The people of India are very sensitive to the Adam's Bridge, which in India is called the Rama Bridge, because in the Ramayana it is described that it was Rama who built the bridge with the help of his assistants. The name Adam's Bridge was given by Muslims who believed that it was on it that Adam, expelled from Paradise, walked on his way to Eve. Indians consider the bridge to be their national treasure, tourists are also interested in it, near the beginning of the bridge in India, you can take an excursion and walk along the ancient path to Sri Lanka.

However, the Adam's Bridge could be destroyed. For a very long time, the question has been raised of making the Polk Strait navigable, in which the Rama Bridge is located. However, to do this, the bridge will have to be destroyed, but this will allow ships to ply more freely in these waters, saving up to 30 hours of time spent sailing around the islands. Similar ideas were expressed by Jevakharlal Nehru, but he did not dare to destroy the national treasure. Debate erupted again in 2007, when the government announced its plan, while arguing that the bridge is a natural formation, which means it has no cultural value.

However, the local population, to whom the Rama Bridge is dear, as one of the real confirmations of the truthfulness of the Ramayana scriptures and proof of the ancient history of the country, came out in defense of the bridge. A special organization was even formed.
