Canyonlands National Park, Utah (with Map & Photos)

Grand Canyon there is only one, that's true. All possible superlatives have already been said about this crack in the earth. But if we follow the course of the Colorado River upstream, we arrive at Canyonalnds National Park, which, as its name indicates in English, is a land of canyons, plateaus and rock spiers that draw a horizon of film.

The Canyonlands National Park is one of my favorites. We have already visited it twice and for sure we will return. The magnitude of this park has allowed us to explore it on foot, by bicycle and in our own car, being able to taste and feel its orography from within, feeling part of a landscape that reminds us of what the Wild West could be.

The erosion caused by the Colorado River and its tributary, the Green River, have designed one of the greatest landscapes on the West Coast of the United States, with more than 1,300 square kilometers of labyrinthine canyons, where you can get away from unbridled tourism, and who knows, knows that I love that.

Canyonlands National Park is located within the circuit of the most famous national parks in southern Utah, just 50 km from Moab, which together with Arches National Park, make this population of just over five thousand inhabitants, an essential destination.

Canyonlands National Park is divided into 3 regions, each of which has different characteristics. As close as they may seem, there is no road that connects them and it takes more than two hours of driving to go from one to the other:

Island in the Sky is the most accessible district and therefore the most visited. Along its main road there are plenty of scenic views, some not too demanding hikes, and a very popular dirt track for 4WD vehicles.

The Needles is the area with the most hiking trails. This region stands out for its multi-colored rock spiers and giant mushrooms.

The Maze, is the least visited area. It is the most remote and demanding region, which is reached by dirt roads.

If you are coming to Canyonlands from the south, you will normally be coming from Monument Valley. If you leave early in the morning, you will be in time to visit Canyonlands. If, on the other hand, you travel to Moab the same day that you visit Monument Valley, the best thing is to arrive in Moab and settle in the city, to visit Canyonlands the next day.
