The Black Forest ("Black Forest", Schwarzwald) gets its name from the dark and deep color of evergreen trees that grow here in abundance. However, despite its gloomy but romantic name, this region, located in the state of Baden-Württemberg, is equally dotted with open sunny slopes and variegated ribbons of farmland. In short, spending a vacation here means getting into a real fairy tale, for example, about Robin Hood or about Little Red Riding Hood and the Gray Wolf.

Just a 20 minute walk, even from a large crowded village, will take you to the quiet countryside, which is constantly patrolled by adorable dairy cows. The nature of the Black Forest is not wild or scary, but cozy, picturesque and pastoral.

How to get there

If you have a car, you are lucky: it is best to explore the Black Forest in your car, discovering deep ravines, green hills and sunny valleys along the route. The main tourist and perhaps the most picturesque road here is the Schwarzwald-Hochstrasse (B500), which runs from Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt and from Triberg to Waldshut.

The Black Forest lies east of the Rhine, between the cities of Karlsruhe and Basel . The forest is shaped like beans, about 160 km long and 50 km wide. If you travel across the region from north to south, it is worth visiting at least three worthy places: Schiltach, Triberg and Lake Titisee. They all have good rail links with major cities in Germany. Also worth a visit is Freiburg, a vibrant and thriving university city and the unofficial capital of the Black Forest.

The northern part of the Black Forest, with its hilly but relatively gentle relief, is famous for several charming cities at once. The main one, of course, is Freudenstadt, which is also considered a good starting point for excursions in the surrounding area.

In general, the main point of attraction in the Black Forest should be a kind of triangle between Freiburg, which is 15 km east of the Rhine, Triberg (the capital of those famous cuckoo clocks) in the north and the charming valley at St. Blazin in the southeast.
