Kaliakra Fortress, Kavarna, Bulgaria (with Map & Photos)

Kaliakra Fortress Bulgaria

The Kaliakra fortress is located on a very picturesque and rocky cape in Bulgaria. The fortress was built in the 14th century, but the main moment of its historical glory fell in 1791 - the year of the decisive battle between the Turkish and Russian fleets.

This battle was a turning point in the war, allowing to further consolidate the success of the Russian army. The lands around the Kaliakra Fortress, together with the Fortress itself, became the property of Bulgarian Prince Karvun. Gradually, the Fortress was overturned, its walls were reinforced, it acquired larger and larger dimensions and became increasingly majestic.

The Kaliakra Fortress in Bulgaria at that time was not only a military fortification, but also, so to speak, a city within a city, because besides the prince's residence were located: the mint, government offices and the mother church. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Kaliakra had already lost its previous meaning and new and modern buildings began to be built close to it. Among them are a lighthouse and wind farms.

Nowadays, the cape itself and the Kaliakra Fortress located on it are part of the reserve, which is surrounded by magnificent nature. The territory of Fortaleza and the reserve is open every day to visitors.
