Marvão Castle, Alentejo, Portugal (with Map & Photos)

The Castle of Marvão was built on the rock, at the western end of the village of Marvão, by orders of D. Dinís during the late eighteenth century, although almost everything that can be seen today is the result of modifications made during the century XVII.

Near the entrance there is a large vaulted cistern, still filled with water today.

From the top of the Torre del Homenaje you will be able to contemplate some excellent peak views of the various precincts of the castle, especially the crenellated towers and the watchtowers built on the edge of the precipice.

It is possible to walk around the city on the castle walls. From its battlements you will enjoy impressive views over the town of Marvão, the Sierra de São Mamede, Serra da Estrela, Castelo Branco and the Spanish mountains.

The castle grounds are surrounded by gardens full of hedges, from which you can access the Church of Santa Maria, which houses the Municipal Museum.
