The bridge was commissioned by Friedrich Hermann Rötschke during the 19th century as part of the romantic landscape design of Kromlau Park. Built primarily from basalt, the bridge and its surrounding stone formations were designed to create a dramatic and almost otherworldly garden landscape.
Why Is It Called Devil's Bridge?
The name Devil's Bridge comes from the traditional idea that a bridge with such an unusual and seemingly delicate arch must have been built by the Devil. Its distinctive design, combined with its reflection in the lake, gives the monument a mysterious appearance.
The bridge's semicircular arch and its reflection can visually form a complete circle when the surface of the Rakotzsee is calm. This unusual effect is the main reason Rakotzbrücke has become one of Germany's most photographed bridges.

Rhododendron Park Kromlau
The bridge is the centerpiece of the extensive Rhododendron Park Kromlau, a historic landscape park developed from the 1840s onward. The park features ponds, unusual basalt sculptures, grottos, gardens, and extensive rhododendron plantings.
The Rakotz ensemble includes not only the bridge but also basalt formations in the lake, including the structure known as the “Basalt Organ.” Together, these elements create one of the most distinctive examples of 19th-century romantic garden architecture in Germany.
Restoration of Devil's Bridge
After suffering significant structural deterioration, the Rakotzbrücke underwent an extensive restoration between 2018 and 2021. The work preserved the historic appearance of the bridge and its surrounding ensemble while protecting the monument for future generations.
Best Time to See the Bridge
For the famous circular reflection, calm weather is ideal because even small ripples can distort the image in the water. The surrounding rhododendrons also make the park particularly attractive during their flowering season.
