Sørvágsvatn Lake, Vágar, Faroe Islands (with Map & Photos)

Sørvágsvatn Lake  – often called the "Lake Above the Ocean" – 🌊 is one of the most surreal and iconic sights in the Faroe Islands. It’s located on the island of Vágar and is the largest lake in the Faroes.

🌊 What Makes Sørvágsvatn So Unique?

1. The Optical Illusion
From a famous viewpoint on the Trælanípa cliffs, the lake appears to float high above the ocean.
In reality, the lake is only about 30 meters above sea level, but the steep drop-off and perspective create an illusion that it’s suspended hundreds of meters in the air. It’s a photographer’s dream.

2. Dramatic Landscape
Sørvágsvatn is surrounded by dramatic sea cliffs, rolling green hills, and misty skies typical of the Faroes. It ends in a waterfall called Bøsdalafossur, which spills directly into the Atlantic Ocean—a striking and powerful sight.

3. Hiking Experience
There's a popular and relatively easy hike (approx. 6.5 km round trip) to the viewpoint. It’s one of the most rewarding short hikes in the Faroes, offering breathtaking views and that iconic "floating lake" photo op.

4. Untamed Beauty
Like much of the Faroe Islands, Sørvágsvatn is peaceful, wild, and untouched. It’s a place where nature feels completely in charge, and every weather shift creates a new mood.
