Lake Malawi, also known as Lake Nyasa in Tanzania and Lago Niassa in Mozambique, is a remarkable freshwater lake situated in southeastern Africa. It is bordered by Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania, and forms part of the East African Rift system.

Lake Malawi is the third-largest lake in Africa by surface area and the second-deepest, following Lake Tanganyika. It ranks as the ninth-largest lake globally by area and the fourth-largest by volume.

The lake is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, particularly its fish species. It hosts over 700 species of cichlids, many of which are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else on Earth. This makes Lake Malawi the lake with the greatest number of fish species globally.

Other aquatic life includes various species of catfish, cyprinids, and invertebrates. The lake also supports populations of Nile crocodiles, hippopotamuses, and African fish eagles.

The lake's shores are dotted with picturesque beaches, rocky outcrops, and islands such as Likoma and Chizumulu.
