The "regions" were renamed "uprava" after the Mongol Empire was overthrown and the Ming Empire was established; as a result, in 1368 the Hangzhou Administration was established, with control over the southern half of the modern Longyan urban district and the northern half of the modern Sanming urban district. Longyan County was removed from Zhangzhou County's jurisdiction during the Qing Dynasty in 1734, forming Longyan Directly Ruled Region. Zhangping and Ningyang counties also became subject to the authorities.

AfterThe regions and councils were dissolved during the Xinhai Revolution in China, which led to the dissolution of the Tingzhou and Zhangzhou councils in 1912 and the renaming of the directly managed area of Longyan as Longyan County.

The Yong'an Special Region was abolished in March 1956, and the counties of Yong'an, Ninghua, Qingliu, and Ningyang were moved to the Longyan Special Region. Ningyang County was dissolved in July of the same year, and its area was split between Zhanping, Yong'an, and Longyan counties.

The counties of Qingliu and Tsinghua were combined to become Qingning County in February 1959. A new division of Qingning County into Qingliu County and Ninghua County took place in 1961. In 1962, the counties of Qingliu, Ninghua, and Yong'an were placed under the control of the Sanming county authority in the city, which was in turn directly under the provincial authorities.
