In Michigan City, Indiana, there is a mall with outdoor outlet stores called Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets. One of Michigan City's top tourist destinations is the mall. As of 2017, it was one of Northwest Indiana's busiest shopping areas, with an estimated million people yearly. The mall is situated in the heart of Michigan City. In an effort to capitalize on its closeness to Lake Michigan, it is intended to resemble a beachside community.

A Pullman Company railcar manufacturing previously stood in the location where the mall is now.
The mall's construction began in the fall of 1986, and its central court opened in May 1987.
In contrast to many malls of the time, Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets was built in the city's center rather than next to a freeway, and it was an outdoor mall rather than an indoor one.
The 11th Street station on the South Shore Line is close to the mall.
