Phipps Plaza, Atlanta's first multi-level mall, debuted in 1969 to dominate the region's retail landscape. The mall had two stories when it first opened. The development was bought by investor Ogden Phipps in 1966 for less than $600,000 and sold to Simon Properties in 1992 for $488 million. In addition to its two original anchors, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor, Phipps acquired a third anchor, Parisian, situated in Birmingham, Alabama, that year as part of a $140 million makeover and expansion. Parisian is owned by the parent company of Saks Fifth Avenue. Their flagship store and a second site in the Atlanta region was at Town Center at Cobb, which opened in 1992.
