On August 15, 1974, the New York City-based Shopco Development Company's Valley Mall held its grand opening. In Western Maryland and the Tri-State Region, it was regarded as the second mall to open (the first being its then-sister mall Frederick Towne Mall in Frederick, Maryland, which opened in 1972). The mall had 90 businesses when it first opened, including the grocery store Pantry Pride, Montgomery Ward, Eyerly's, JCPenney, McCrory's, and Peoples Pharmacy.
