On the other end of the Lansing metropolitan region, Lansing Mall, which is its primary rival, also opened in 1969. The J.W. Knapp Company and Woolco were the mall's initial anchor businesses, and it has undergone several additions throughout the years. In 1979, a G. C. Murphy penny shop was partitioned to make room for more mall space, and a year later, J.W. Knapp sold its store to JCPenney.
