Kronborg Castle, located in the coastal city of Helsingør, is one of the few UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Denmark. At the beginning of the 15th century, the Danish King Eric of Pomerania decided to build a fortress in the north of the country to collect tolls from all merchandise ships that wanted to cross the Baltic Sea.

A century later, a beautiful Renaissance palace was built on top of this old fortress, which was for a long time the largest in Europe. Kronborg Castle became a military center, a prison, and the temporary residence of the King of Denmark. Today it is the headquarters of the Maritime and Commerce Museum.

Hamlet's Castle

The most famous playwright of all time, William Shakespeare, was inspired by Kronborg Castle to set one of his most famous works: Hamlet. It is worth visiting the rooms and corridors where the ghost of the late king reveals to Hamlet who murdered him. Every summer Hamlet is performed at Kronborg Castle.

In addition, in Kronborg you can also visit the armory, the great banquet hall, the church and the underground passages. Here rests the statue of the mythical Danish hero Holger, who will only wake up when Denmark is at war and needs his help.

Kronborg en el siglo XXI

Today, Kronborg Castle continues to serve as a royal residence. On very special occasions, Queen Margaret welcomes international guests to Kronborg and presents them with the gift of staying at Hamlet's Castle. Furthermore, Kronborg's historic cannons are still fired to this day whenever the Queen's yacht passes by.

When Denmark presided over the European Union in 2012, Queen Margrethe held a summit with 25 European prime ministers at Kronborg Castle. The rooms do not have electricity and the main rooms do not have a bathroom, so it was a stay in the purest medieval style.
