The Curious Kapoho black sand beach in Hawaii

In this article we will again look at a beach on the big island, or it may be better to say a series of natural pools. We talk about Kapoho. Kapoho Bay offers a truly unique bathing experience. There are numerous interconnected natural pools that stretch for about 200 meters along the coast, so we can't really talk about a beach.

Many of these "pools" are large and deep, and can accommodate several swimmers and divers. Some of these pools are volcanically heated and the water temperature is quite warm, reaching over thirty degrees Celsius. These make this Hawaiian coast visited by all kinds of people looking for this unusual oceanfront setting.

In the outermost natural pools of Kapoho by the ocean, there is a wide variety of marine life, such as fish of all kinds, crabs, crustaceans, etc. However, it is better not to get too close to the line that joins the ocean since in certain areas there can be quite strong currents.

The pools formed in the innermost rock are usually always calm – except during the stormy season – and they are a very good area to dive with goggles and fins, since the water is clear and protected from currents. On calmer days, people come to the reef to fish, while divers investigate the outer reef. These areas can be accessed by boat from outside.

It is better to wear proper footwear to do this. The entire coastline consists of black lava clothes, which are irregular and can cut. There is no sand at all, so the use of shoes is justified. This is advisable both for walking along the coast and for bathing in the pools.

There are a few houses on the beachfront, and some residents have incorporated some of these natural pools on their property for private use and use them as private hot water "bathtubs".

On the other hand we have the old and small town of Kapoho, which was destroyed in the sixties by the eruption of its closest volcano. All that was left of it was the lighthouse at Cape Kumukahi, which can be visited by road. A new community has been rebuilt in Kapoho Bay, which we can visit to eat or stay.

In fact, this community has been called Kapoho Beach. To the south, there is another community where you have access to other public natural pools. However, it is an area protected by conservation laws, which means that you cannot fish and guided tours are prohibited.
