Samosir Island, Sumatra, Indonesia (with Map & Photos)

Samosir Island, within Lake Toba, is one of the most fascinating places in all of Indonesia.

Hidden in the middle of the island of Sumatra, getting there is not easy, but it is well worth it. It is a completely different place from the rest of Indonesia, which can be seen in its culture, its traditions and its architecture.

Of course, I did not pass up the opportunity to visit this remote place in the depths of Sumatra. So up to Lake Toba I headed with my friend Daniel after spending a week in Bukittinggi. The odyssey of the journey -accident included- we forgot the moment we set foot on the island of Samosir.

Lake Toba -danau Toba in Indonesian- is one of the largest in Southeast Asia, although at first glance it does not seem so huge because in the center there is an island of considerable dimensions. The Samosir Island is a very interesting place, as it is inhabited by an ethnic group with customs and traditions different from the rest of Indonesia. This has made the place one of the main tourist destinations in Sumatra, which does not imply large crowds as few foreigners venture to explore this region of Indonesia.

Lake Toba and especially, the Samosir Island is a perfect place to rest, unwind and relax. For one thing, traffic is limited. You do not know what it is appreciated to stop hearing the incessant noise of the motorcycles. On the other, there is a very relaxed atmosphere. The tourists who come here are not looking for a party.
