The Nikko National Park in the vicinity of the city of the same name is considered by the Japanese to be one of the main natural treasures of their country. It is located 125 km from Tokyo and is great for a one-day or two-day sightseeing trip from the capital. The sanctuaries, temples and bridges scattered throughout its territory are in harmony with the beautiful landscapes of plateaus, waterfalls, rivers and lakes. Nikko is beautiful at any time of the year, so it is always crowded. In spring they come here to admire the flowering of the rare local sakura with golden, rather than the usual pink petals. And in the fall - to catch the bewitching "flame" of withering maples.

What to see

The local flora - the richest coniferous and deciduous forests, alpine meadows and shrubs - is the natural habitat of roe deer, wild boar, sika deer, and white-breasted bear. Macaques live here, as well as many birds, especially green and copper pheasants.

The main point of attraction of the national park is Lake Tyuzenji, the highest in the country, it is located at an altitude of 1269 m. The reservoir was formed after a volcanic eruption, which blocked the flow of local rivers. The result of this natural disaster can be seen at the southern end of the lake: the spectacular 97-meter-high Kegon-no-taki Falls.

There is an elevator next to the cascade that takes visitors to the observation deck located at the bottom of the gorge. The waterfall is especially impressive after a summer rain, when a rainbow is visible in a cloud of spray, or even several.

As in most Japanese parks, Nikko was not without temple complexes and sanctuaries. The largest of them: the Tosegu complex with the tomb of the famous ruler Ieyasu Tokugawa; The superficially similar 17th century Taiyuin Shrine and Takinoo Shrine are a popular pilgrimage site for women from all over Japan. Souvenir shops and small cafes are scattered throughout the park - there are no problems with the infrastructure.
