Amboseli National Park, Kenya (with Map & Photos)

Perhaps when you think of a safari in Kenya the following image comes to mind: a family of elephants grazing peacefully in the vicinity of a lake, while in the background Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, stands out imposingly, always with snow on its summit.

If the imagination is in high hours, you can even add a bloody sunset that cuts out the silhouette of the pachyderms, allowing an immense ball of fire to reflect in the waters. And already put, a flock of flamingos that draws an ellipsis in the sky and masterfully crowns the picture.

Dust swirls

We find all this in Amboseli without the need to resort to fantasy. Because in this Kenyan national park it is nature that has shaped, with no artifice other than its own resources, the most perfect postcard. For this reason it is considered one of the most wonderful enclaves in Kenya, despite - or precisely because of this - being one of the most visited - specifically the second, after the Masai Mara National Reserve.

It is the dust swirls ( Amboseli in Swahili), which often dot the landscape, that give name to these almost 400 square kilometers of terrain that is pre-eminently arid, but in which vegetation suddenly bursts like a miracle thanks to the springs that seep underground from the foot of the Tanzanian mount.

Fauna explosion

When this happens, the animals are concentrated in their surroundings, so it is not difficult to run into buffaloes, gazelles, wildebeest, zebras, giraffes... and many other herbivores, which in turn attract large predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards or spotted hyenas.

But the kings of the park are and will continue to be the elephants, which in Amboseli border on overabundance. Their insatiable appetite - they can eat up to 150 kilos of vegetation daily - poses a threat to the conservation of the flora of this natural space, as is the salinity of the waters and the increasing scarcity of rainfall. For this reason, it is advisable not to neglect this visit, which is still a wonder of nature.

Variety of landscapes

Amboseli is just one of the many dazzling landscapes that await the length and breadth of Kenya, always under the magical African light. Landscapes that include barren deserts, lush forests, glaciers and endless savannah, and which, precisely because of their variety of habitats, do not know monotony: each one welcomes its own wild animals, its own plant universe.

To all this must be added the captivating presence of the enormous African mountain, over which the fatal legend hovers that anyone who dares to ascend it will be immediately petrified. A mountain that is not erected in this park - not even in this country since it belongs to Tanzania - but it is from these places where it reaches its maximum spectacularity.
