History of Stirling Castle: the stronghold of the Stuarts

The history of Stirling Castle dates back to the Middle Ages, as its first buildings were built in the 12th century. But the castle complex was expanded several times in later centuries by all members of the Stuart family, the ruling dynasty in Scotland between the 14th and 17th centuries. The grand entrance is the most recent element, as it was built already outside the domain of the Stuarts, in the 18th century.

The Stuart kings made it one of their great fortresses and even a royal residence during certain periods, which hints at its relevance throughout Scottish history.
