The rock formation is located in the Coconino National Forest in Yavapai County, about 1.6 km west of Route 179 in Arizona and about 4.0 km south of the Y junction of Routes 179 and 89A in the suburbs of Sedona. The height of the summit of Cathedral Rock is 4967 feet (1514 m). Route Cathedral Rock is a popular short steep climb from the trail Back O 'Beyond to the saddle points or "failures" in the Cathedral Rock.

Geologically, the Cathedral Rock is carved from the Permian hill of Shnebli, a red sandstone formed from coastal sand dunes near the coastline of the ancient sea ​​of ​​Pedregos. Ripple marks can be seen along the lower path at Cathedral Rock, and a black basalt embankment can be seen in the first saddle. The cathedral was called "Courthouse Rock" on some early maps, and Bute courthouse was called "Church House Rock", which has caused endless confusion ever since.
