Caernarfon Castle is quite worthy to be spoken about only with the prefix "most". It is the largest, oldest, most majestic and one of the most significant castles in Great Britain and the most impregnable fortress of the Old World, which has a centuries-old history full of heroic and sometimes dramatic events.

Construction history

Wood fortifications appeared on the Welsh North Sea coast before our era. In the 1st century. n. e. Roman legionaries took possession of it and in three hundred years turned it from a wooden fort into a rather powerful and impregnable stone fortress. Later, a separate kingdom of Guinedd was formed here, from where, according to unofficial data, the wife of King Richard the Lionheart was born, the one who presented him with the legendary round knight's table. But only at the end of the 13th century, this castle began to acquire the appearance that we can see today, its construction was then initiated by King Edward I.

In the second half of the last century, Caernarfon was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

By the 30s of the 14th century, the construction of the castle was completed, and by this time he had already managed to gain the glory of a truly impregnable fortress. Its foundation exactly matches the outlines of the rocks on which the fortress is located.

From the sea, Caernarfon cannot be reached because of the sheer inaccessible rocks, and from the land side it is surrounded by thick walls that reach six meters in height. In addition, the fortress has as many as nine watchtowers, among which the barbicans at the folding gates of the king and queen stand out.
According to historical information that has come down to us since that time, the construction of the castle cost just a fabulous sum - about 22 thousand pounds, which corresponded to the annual budget of the entire British kingdom.

Castle today

Today, the castle has not lost its significance, because it is here, since 1911, that the solemn ceremony of investiture (obtaining of powers) of the Prince of Wales has been held. By the way, it was within the walls of Caernarfon that the title "Prince of Wales" was born, which is now traditionally passed on to the heirs of the British throne along with the royal crown. And the first Prince of Wales was the son of Edward I in 1301. In addition, knights' tournaments, various cultural events and historical reenactments are held here.
